چکیده
Drawing on a motivated information processing model, we tested the hypothesis that groups' receptivity to outside advice is facilitated by their epistemic motivation—the desire gain an accurate understanding of world. Epistemic motivation was measured proxy in Study 1 using team task reflexivity measure, and experimentally manipulated Studies 2 3 varying, respectively, either amount time allotted complete or whether consensus judgment required before receiving advice. Receptivity operationalized as group seeking 2, utilization 3. In support our hypothesis, groups with higher levels consistently sought out utilized more than those lower motivation. Moreover, affected accuracy via

Investment Competence and Advice Seeking
This paper evaluates individuals’ ability to avoid investment mistakes and analyzes how investment competence is related to the propensity to seek or rely on professional advice. To address these issues, we use novel survey data collected from a representative sample of Swiss households. We find that investment competence is characterized by significant age and gender gaps, and that individuals...
متن کاملAdvice-seeking and competence 1 Smart People Ask For (My) Advice: Seeking Advice Boosts Perceptions of Competence
Although individuals can derive substantial benefits from exchanging information and ideas, many individuals are reluctant to seek advice from others. We find that people are reticent to seek advice for fear of appearing incompetent. This fear, however, is misplaced. We demonstrate that individuals perceive those who seek advice as more competent than those who do not seek advice. This effect i...

Machine learning approaches that utilize human experts combine domain experience with data to generate novel knowledge. Unfortunately, most methods either provide only a limited form of communication with the human expert and/or are overly reliant on the human expert to specify their knowledge upfront. Thus, the expert is unable to understand what the system could learn without their involvemen...
متن کاملActive Advice Seeking for Inverse Reinforcement Learning
Intelligent systems that interact with humans typically require input in the form of demonstrations and/or advice for optimal decision making. In more traditional systems, such interactions require detailed and tedious effort on the part of the human expert. Alternatively, active learning systems allow for incremental acquisition of the demonstrations from the human expert where the learning sy...
متن کاملLearning Through Advice-Seeking via Transfer
Experts possess vast knowledge that is typically ignored by standard machine learning methods. This rich, relational knowledge can be utilized to learn more robust models especially in the presence of noisy and incomplete training data. Such experts are often domain but not machine learning experts. Thus, deciding what knowledge to provide is a difficult problem. Our goal is to improve the huma...
